Confessions of an Interior Designer- What do I do?

When I was in college every time my good friend Tarah introduced me to someone she would say, "This is Lauren.  She's an interior designer, but she will not pick out your three thousand dollar couch."  To this day it still makes me laugh.
Apparently one time she asked me what I wanted to do when I graduated and I informed her that an interior designer can do so much more than pick out couches.  In fact, I have never picked out a couch other than my mother's.

So what do I do?
My title at my current job is an 'Interior and Architectural Designer.'  To simply put it I space plan and design buildings.  Everything from the look of the exterior, where each room will go and to the look and feel of the interior.  I actually very rarely pick out paint colors or tile samples.  That is a fun part of the job, but not what I look forward to.
My favorite thing to do at work is to solve a problem.  Sometimes the problem is how to get a certain amount of rooms into a space, or my favorite is piecing together plans of a historic building. There is always a problem to solve and that makes it exciting for me.   Everyday is something new and I love that!

Another great part of my job is 'Construction Administration.'  I like to tell people that I am on site to make sure that the contractors build my projects correctly.  And if they don't, I get to call them out.

Hi, my name is Lauren.  I am an interior and architectural designer.  No, I will not pick out your three thousand dollar couch.  But I will design the house that your couch is going to go in and tell your contractor what to do!!

Oh, the glamorous life of a designer.
Pinterest has nothing on me!!

What do you do?  What is your favorite part of your job?
What did you think I did until this moment?

Perhaps I should be picking out your $3000 couch.  Perhaps I just don't want to fit the stereotype of what people think an interior designer is.  Or perhaps this is just a Confession of an Interior Designer.

I loved reading this and what our friend said made me laugh :)
Your job sound fun and exciting - something new everyday.

Me - I'm a stay-at-home mom that just started homeschooling my son. I teach piano to several students. I love the fact that I can be with my son, play with him and watch hime grow. I love the time I get teaching my students the joy of music and how it will take them to delightful places :)

Anyway, now I'm rambling. Have a great day Lauren!

Boom. My old roommate was the only girl in the Construction Science program at OU.

She was also an ex-Cowboys cheerleader. She loved bossing around the boys with that long blonde hair hahaa

One of my friends does the same thing as you do and I think it is the coolest thing. My job is not as cool so I won't bore you! Haha well it's event planning but it's lame I promise.
haha I love you, hate to bust your bubble, but if I'm going to have a nice house at all, it will require your interior design advice! ;) You may have to pick out a couch yet, but since I'm, well me I guess it wouldn't be your "job" just a nice thing to do. :D Oh, and I can guarantee it won't be a $3,000 couch!
And, no worries, I'm always happy to lend my political opinions in return!
